The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment

Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino observatory under construction in Japan, set to begin data-taking in 2028. It will be the world’s largest water Cherenkov detector, designed to study neutrinos and explore fundamental physics.

Its key goals include investigating neutrino oscillation, particularly the first-ever observation of CP symmetry violation in the lepton sector, and detecting supernova neutrinos. Moreover, Hyper-Kamiokande will be the largest and most sensitive experiment to search for a nucleon decay. The experiment will also probe dark matter and exotic particles, expanding our knowledge of the universe and testing new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Our group contributes to the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment’s construction by testing various detector components for pressure resistance, as the bottom of the detector will experience up to 7 bar of water pressure. We design and manufacture underwater stainless steel vessels to house electronics for the system of novel so-called multi-PMT photosensors.

On analysis side, we are involved in the development of the methods for Bayesian statistical inference for MaCh3 framework, which is designed to efficiently handle complex data sets. This framework will play a crucial role in the neutrino oscillation analysis at Hyper-Kamiokande.
